Vince Gill’s latest 50 Years From Home release turns a decades-long friendship into a songwriting partnership. Marty And Me, released October 16, features five new songs Gill wrote with Marty Stuart.
The eleventh installment in Gill’s year-long EP series draws on a relationship that began when both musicians were teenagers playing bluegrass. Gill later contributed to Stuart’s 1985 solo single “Arlene,” and their paths continued to intersect through careers rooted in country and bluegrass.
Five new songs written together
Stuart joins Gill on vocals and guitar for the opening song, “Praying Like Hell For Rain.” The EP’s other new co-writes are “Wanting Me,” “My Broken Heart Can’t Take It Anymore,” “The Girl That Calls My Name” and the title track.
Sonya Isaacs supplies harmony vocals on “Wanting Me,” while John Meador adds backing vocals to “My Broken Heart Can’t Take It Anymore.” The selections move through country shuffles, heartbreak songs, a road narrative and a waltz reflecting on the pair’s shared history.
A cover with its own country-music history
The artwork links the collaboration to another of their common influences: guitarist Clarence White. It features Stuart’s Fender Telecaster and Gill’s custom Mark Whitebook acoustic, both formerly owned by White.
Gill’s ongoing EP series uses instruments from his collection on its covers. For this volume, the two guitars provide a visual connection between the artists’ present-day collaboration and the musicians who helped shape their playing.
The announcement also includes a 35th-anniversary gold-vinyl reissue of Gill’s Pocket Full of Gold, giving listeners another route into the catalog alongside the new EP.
