Cooper Alan has quickly emerged as a distinctive voice in the contemporary country music scene. Blending traditional country sensibilities with a modern edge, Alan has carved a niche for himself through his raw talent, relatable lyrics, and unique approach to music creation and fan engagement.
Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Alan developed a passion for music from an early age, influenced by a diverse range of genres beyond country music, including rock and pop. His childhood was filled with exposure to a wide variety of music, thanks to his parents, and he formed his first band in eighth grade, focusing primarily on classic rock covers. However, it was during his time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that Alan began to pursue music more seriously, performing with his band at local bars and fraternity parties throughout the Carolinas.
After graduating from college, Alan made the leap to Nashville, the heart of country music, to pursue his dreams. The transition proved challenging, but he quickly learned the importance of fostering positive relationships and surrounding himself with supportive people. His talent and potential were recognized by hit songwriter and producer Victoria Shaw, who signed him to a publishing deal within weeks of his arrival. Shaw, known for her work with artists like Garth Brooks, provided invaluable guidance, helping Alan hone his songwriting skills and refine his artistic vision.
Alan’s career truly took off in 2020, amidst the global pandemic, when he leveraged the power of social media, particularly TikTok, to connect with fans and share his music. Despite initial skepticism, his girlfriend encouraged him to explore the platform, and he soon recognized its potential for reaching a wider audience. His breakout single, “New Normal,” released in 2020, resonated deeply with listeners adjusting to the new realities of life during the pandemic, becoming his first viral hit and racking up tens of thousands of streams on Spotify within its first day.
“Until 2020, there was no way for anybody to just get it out there and reach people. So I was one of those people that didn’t really have a whole lot going on in the fan-making department until TikTok,” he says. “So it was just kind of a leveling of the playing field and just letting fans kind of decide what they wanted to hear. And so it was a huge, huge blessing for me. And the fact that it led to real fans that wanted to listen to my music and see my shows and buy t-shirts and all that stuff is still pretty fricking crazy to think about. It feels normal now that we’re in it, but if you had told anybody that six years ago, they’d be like, you’re out of your mind.”
Following the success of “New Normal,” Alan continued to release a string of popular singles, including the clever 2019 debut “Climate Change,” the heartfelt “Tough Ones” (which reached number 23 on Billboard’s Hot Digital Singles chart), and the collaborative track “First Rodeo” featuring Filmore and Seth Ennis. He also showcased his humorous side with the “Colt 45 Country Remix,” a reimagining of the Afroman classic with country lyrics, which has been streamed millions of times.
“I was always driven by the show – even more than the songs,” he admits. “I got into this whole thing playing in bars, and it was all about being an entertainer, just giving people a hell of a night.”
Cooper Alan’s music is characterized by his soulful vocals, memorable melodies, and relatable lyrics that explore themes of love, heartache, and the ups and downs of life. He effortlessly blends classic country elements with contemporary pop sensibilities, creating a sound that appeals to both traditional and modern country music fans. His ability to connect with audiences through his songwriting and engaging live performances has solidified his reputation as a dynamic and talented artist.
“I get a lot of comments saying, ‘Oh that’s not country music,’” Alan admits. “And it’s like, ‘Hey I love Merle Haggard! And like Merle, I’m doing my own thing, making music my own way. And the fans are responding, showing up night after night to sing every single word to my songs!”
Beyond his musical endeavors, Alan is also using his platform to advocate for mental health awareness. Through his foundation, he is working to destigmatize mental wellness and encourage open conversations about the topic. This personal commitment adds another layer to his artistry, demonstrating his dedication to making a positive impact on the world around him.
Alan’s commitment to releasing a steady stream of singles, along with the recent release of his five-song EP, “Take Forever,” and the upcoming debut full-length album scheduled for October, showcases his relentless work ethic and artistic drive. He continues to tour actively, bringing his high-energy performances to venues and festivals across the country.
In a testament to his rising popularity and impact, Cooper Alan was recently named a 2024 Pandora Ten Artist to Watch and included in the Sirius XM and Pandora 2024 Future Five List. His massive social media following, exceeding 14 million across platforms, underscores his ability to connect with fans on a personal level. He actively engages with his audience both onstage and online, fostering a strong sense of community around his music.
Cooper Alan’s journey in the country music industry is a testament to the power of talent, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace new technologies and connect with fans in innovative ways. From his humble beginnings playing in local bars to becoming a social media sensation and a rising star in Nashville, Alan has shown a remarkable ability to adapt and thrive in a constantly evolving musical landscape. His heartfelt lyrics, captivating melodies, and undeniable stage presence ensure that he will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the country music scene for years to come.
