Singer-songwriter Chase Brown chatted about his new song “Closer to U”.
‘Closer to U’ song
On the idea for his new song, Brown said, “It’s a crazy story. I actually woke up from a dream with the chorus’ melody stuck in my head.”
“I forgot about it at first, but after two weeks later, it came back to me again. I found the instrumental perfect for it, and ended up writing the song in about an hour, so that’s how ‘Closer to U’ came about,” he elaborated.
Music and songwriting inspirations
On his music and songwriting inspirations, he shared, “What inspires me is pretty much everything… Jesus, people, relationships, emotions, memories and even just playing the guitar.”
“I try to write in a way where it feels like I’m showing the story instead of just telling it… I think that makes it more immersive and relatable,” he added.
The digital age
On being an artist in the digital age, Brown said, “It is weird because everything moves so fast. Songs can blow up and disappear just as quickly, but the emotions behind the songs don’t work like that.”
“I try to focus on making realistic, relatable music instead of chasing trends, because new trends usually come from people just doing their own thing,” he added.
Future plans
On his future plans, he shared, “Right now, I’m focused on growing my relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus, and reading my Bible more. In music, I’m focused on training my voice, playing more instruments, and being more consistent with my music.”
“I’ve also been putting a lot into a new song called ‘Feels like Déjà Vu’ with my twin brother. It’s a song about being reminded of what you had with someone through déjà vu, and I’m really excited about that,” he elaborated.

Dream collaboration choices
Brown listed Somber, Royel Otis, and Dominic Fike as his dream collaboration choices in music. “They all make amazing music,” he admitted. “I am into anybody that has a cool style.”
Biggest musical influences
His biggest musical influences include Justin Bieber, John Mayer, Morgan Wallen and Thomas Rhett. “I’ve always loved Justin Bieber’s sound and style and I get inspired by his music,” he said.
“I love John Mayer for his guitar and songwriting, as well as country artists like Morgan Wallen and Thomas Rhett,” he added.
Advice for young and aspiring artists
For young and emerging singer-songwriters, Brown said, “My advice for young emerging musicians is don’t write about things you haven’t actually felt, be authentic.”
“People can tell when it’s not real,” he said. “The parts that hit are usually the small, specific moments that people recognize in their own life.”
“Don’t be afraid to put out ‘bad’ songs. The more you do it, the better you’ll get,” he added.
Success
Regarding his definition of the word success, Brown said, “The word success, to me, means making someone’s favorite song… something they keep coming back to, and even later on it still gives them that same emotional feeling or memory.”
Closing thoughts on ‘Closer to U’ song
For fans and listeners, he expressed, “I want people to listen to ‘Closer to U’ and be reminded of that moment with someone from the summer, that feeling where you know these are gonna be the best memories in a couple months.”
